About

Max Speedwell is the nexus of fitness and good living. We approach the topics of exercise and physical health as elements in a rich and balanced quality of life. This is the context. The goal is to live better and achieve greater fulfillment from all of the things we love to do. Max Speedwell does fitness with a purpose.

For us, there are two basic modes of fitness: training and living. If life were a sport, it would be training and playing. You train and practice so you can play better and perform at your highest levels. We can approach life in the same way. Unfortunately, much of the fitness world is consumed with the training and rarely emphasizes the living. All of the work we do in the gym or with our trainer is rehearsal. The question we should be asking is, what for? Is it for a better golf game or for next year’s heli-skiing trip? Is it to play sports with our kids? Is it to run a marathon for charity? Because working out just to work out not only becomes boring and tedious. It’s not sustainable.

The term sustainability is most often associated the environment and our natural resources. Sustainable fishing means allowing fish populations to replenish in such a way that the resource can last indefinitely. Sustainable fitness means finding a regime (training) and a purpose (living) that can sustain each another in equilibrium for as long as possible. The purpose dictates the regime, while the regime supports the purpose. Since each of us is different, it’s a matter of discovering our individual balance between the two.

If this all sounds quite reasonable, that’s because Max Speedwell wishes to be a voice of reason and a beacon of logic in a market defined by so many gimmicks and false promises. We’ll seek to dispel many of the myths and expose outright scams, while keeping it light and entertaining. While fitness and health are weighty issues, we’re not prone to taking ourselves too seriously.

We will also cover ways that web and mobile technologies are being used as fitness tools. This can include blogging, social networking, mobile applications, and other ways to enrich the fitness experience through new media.
